One thing before anyone scrapes anything: ceilings from before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos in the texture, and the only way to know is a lab test of a small sample. The only honest answer is: test it. Homes finished before the mid-1980s can have asbestos in sprayed texture, and age alone does not settle it either way. A small sample and a lab test settles it.
