Sometimes the right answer is not to save it.
There is a point where patching stops being the economical choice and starts being the expensive one — where the labor of cutting, backing, patching, and floating several spots on one sheet exceeds what it would cost to take the sheet out and hang a new one. Knowing where that line is saves people money, and it is a judgment we make honestly rather than defaulting to whichever one bills higher.
Board that has been saturated does not come back. The gypsum core has lost its crystalline bond and the paper has released from it. There is no patch that addresses that, because the material around the patch is already failing. See our water damage page for what the assessment looks like.
Three or four separate repairs on a single sheet means three or four cut-outs, three or four backings, three or four floats, and three or four texture matches that all have to agree with each other and with the wall. At some point one clean replacement and one continuous texture match is both cheaper and better.
If the cut edge powders when you rub it, the core has lost its bond. Patching into that gives your patch nothing to hold onto.
Standard board in a shower surround, or half-inch on ceiling joists at 24 inches on center, was wrong from the day it went in. Patching it perpetuates the mistake. This comes up more than you would think in homes where a previous owner did their own work.
Past a certain size, a cut-in piece is a sheet replacement in everything but name. Might as well do it properly and land the seams where they belong.
The sheet comes out to the framing members so the new board has something to land on at every edge. Cutting to the middle of a bay leaves an edge with nothing behind it, which is a crack waiting to happen.
With the board off, we can see the cavity. Wet insulation, compromised framing, anything that is not right — we tell you before it gets closed up. It is the only time anyone will see in there, and closing it up over a known problem is not something we are willing to do.
Right thickness for the span, right board for the location. Moisture-resistant where it belongs, five-eighths or sag-resistant on wide-spaced ceiling joists.
Then the seams get taped and floated in coats like any other joint, and the texture gets matched to the surrounding surface.
A replacement gets cut back to framing members, not to the edge of the damage, and it is worth knowing why.
Every edge of a drywall panel needs something solid behind it to fasten to. Cut to the middle of a joist bay and the new sheet has an unsupported edge floating in space — nothing to screw into, nothing to hold it flat, and a seam with no backing under it. That seam cracks. It is not a question of if.
So we find the framing, cut on it, and land the new board so every edge is fastened. It makes the opening larger than the damage. It also makes the repair permanent, which is the trade you want.
The technical reason a replacement takes longer to finish than to hang.
The long edges of a drywall sheet come tapered from the factory — a shallow recess that gives tape and compound somewhere to sit below the plane of the wall. Tape those and the finished surface is flat.
A butt joint, where two cut ends meet, has no taper. The tape and compound have to sit on top of the surface, which means the joint is proud of the wall by definition. The only way to hide it is to spread that bump out over a very wide area — often two feet or more — so the slope is too gentle for light to catch.
It is why a replacement can need more finishing time than several small patches would, and why a fast replacement is usually a visible one.
The incentive on this page runs one direction and you should know we know it. Replacement bills more than patching. So:
A single hole in sound board does not need a sheet replaced. Localized damage in the middle of a large sheet does not either. A crack wants taping, not replacement — the board either side of it is fine.
If someone quoted you a full sheet for one doorknob punch, get a second opinion. Patching is the right answer far more often than replacement is, and we would rather tell you that and be trusted than take the larger number once.
A replacement gets scoped from a few things: roughly how large the damaged area is, whether it is wall or ceiling, what caused it, and what the texture is.
If it is water, the history matters — when it happened, whether it has been fixed, whether the stain has changed size since. If the stain has not grown in a year the source is dead and we can move immediately. If it grew after the last rain, we need that trade first.
A photo settles most of it, and often we can give you the number before anyone drives out.
