Patching is the everyday work of this trade, and the whole craft of it comes down to one judgment call made before any tool comes out: how big does this repair need to be?
Get that call right and the patch disappears. Get it wrong — almost always by going too small — and you get a repair that either cracks at the edges or shows as a soft rectangle in raking light forever.
The instinct is to make the repair as small as the damage. It feels tidier and it feels cheaper. It is usually wrong, for a reason that is easy to miss: the visible damage and the actual damage are different sizes.
If the core is intact and it is just a surface dent, that fills and floats. No cutting. Genuinely small stuff.

Think about what you are physically building. New compound sits on top of the existing wall surface, which means the patch area is slightly proud of everything around it. That is unavoidable — you cannot fill a hole with less material than the hole holds.
So the question is not whether there is a bump. There is always a bump. The question is how gradually it comes back down to the wall. Spread that transition over eighteen inches and light cannot find it; the slope is too gentle to throw a shadow. Stop it at four inches and you have built a low, wide plateau with a defined edge, and that edge catches raking light and reads as a rectangle forever.
This is why a patch that takes twenty minutes to fill takes three visits to finish properly. It is not slow work. It is wide work, in thin coats, each one dry before the next — because compound recoated wet shrinks and cracks later.

Drywall work is gated by drying time, not labor. A three-coat repair has two unavoidable waits in it. Six repairs across a house take barely longer than one, because they all dry in parallel. Reported one at a time, they become six visits and six drying cycles, and you pay the trip each time.

Raking light finds everything. A wall with a window along its length is lit at a low angle all day, and that angle turns any ridge or texture edge into a shadow. Patches on those walls have to be genuinely right.
Flat light forgives. An interior wall lit by a ceiling fixture is far more tolerant. The same patch that would be obvious across from a window can be effectively invisible here.
Ceilings are the worst case. Nothing to hide behind and raking light all day. It is why ceiling work gets floated wider than the identical repair on a wall.
Hallways are close quarters. Narrow means you see the wall from two feet away rather than ten, and everything is more visible at two feet.
Three things scope a patch in about a minute: roughly how big, roughly where in the room, and what the texture is — smooth, orange peel, knockdown, or popcorn. If you do not know the texture, a photo answers it instantly and usually settles the price too.
Also useful: whether anything above or behind that spot has ever leaked, and whether the house is old enough that the texture might be hand-applied.
